10 Years of The Trench
January 2014 - I was asked if I would be interested in scoring a short film for a group of film students from York University. The short was based on the play of the same title by Les Enfants Terrible, who had performed the piece at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012/13.
Described by the director, Alex Campbell on his website:
When I began composing the music for this project, I knew I wanted to steer away from the traditional war film score. The usual brass-heavy, bombastic sound that often accompanies wartime scenes felt out of place for this story. Instead, I aimed to create a score that would be an integral part of the storytelling without overpowering the narrative. The music is present almost throughout the entire film, adding depth to the mood and emotion.
For my first foray into scoring to picture, I believe the soundtrack achieved its purpose. It stands alongside the film, enhancing the story without taking center stage. This experience was a pivotal moment in my career, marking the beginning of my journey into film scoring.
